| The Holy Spirit |
| Part Seven: The Holy Spirit Today we will be talking about walking with God/walking with the Holy Spirit. We will be looking at the fact we are still human and sometimes fail as will as achieve what God desires us to do. Romans 8:1-2 KJV (1) There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. (2) For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. There is no condemnation for those that are in Christ. In other words those that believe in Jesus. It is very simple one must believe to be saved. But here is what sometimes is not understood if we believe we walk not after the flesh/sin nature but walk after the Spirit of God. God law of salvation through Jesus has done away with the law of sin and death. In other words when you became saved you no longer were condemn to death and hell. Death meaning spiritual death. When judgment day comes those that do not accept Christ will face spiritual death as well as physical death. Revelation 20:15 KJV (15) And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire. Our name is written in the book of life when we get saved. Luke 10:17-20 KJV (17) And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name. (18) And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven. (19) Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you. (20) Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven. When we see the gifts of God and the fruits of the Spirit in our lives we know without doubt that our names are written in the book of life. We should then have no fear of death. In the last lesson I spoke on the fact of how we know if the gifts are from God has well as the fruits. James 2:17-18 KJV (17) Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. (18) Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works. Faith is essential to walking with God but so is obedience to God. Our works in our life demonstrate our obedience to God. In other words If we claim to have the Holy Spirit indwelling in our lives we should be living our life according to God will and purpose for it. I here the word but coming from a few folks. But I am not perfect yet I believe. My life does not always reflex my faith. I do not know anyone in this world accept Jesus that was perfect. We all struggle with living in this world and walking after God even after getting saved. That is why maybe I love Romans 7 and 8 so much. Take a look at these verses. Romans 7:14-25 KJV (14) For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin. (15) For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I. (16) If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good. (17) Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. (18) For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not. (19) For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do. (20) Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. (21) I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me. (22) For I delight in the law of God after the inward man: (23) But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. (24) O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? (25) I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin. When I read this passage I am encouraged that I am not the only that wrestles against sin/disobedience. Though often times we desire to serve God we do fall short. In other words we often do those things which we know we should not do. Though our heart is toward God we fail. But does this mean we have no hope no. We serve with our heart God and sin in the flesh. This does not give a license to sin in the flesh but it is saying we desire to do God will but often times we do the opposite because of the fact we live in the world. Let us look at a few more verses that make it a bit plainer. Romans 8:3-10 KJV (3) For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: (4) That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. (5) For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. (6) For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. (7) Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. (8) So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. (9) But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. (10) And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. When we follow and believe in Jesus we are consider righteous. Abraham believed and it was accounted as righteousness. Abraham lived by faith meaning by believing and by doing what God asked. Abraham sinned when he did not wait on the Lord for a son. Yet Abraham loved God and still desired to do what God asked him. As Christians we are no different we are righteous through faith in Christ and yet we still sometimes sin. Christ paid the price for our sin. 1 John 1:3-10 KJV (3) That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ. (4) And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full. (5) This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. (6) If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: (7) But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. (8) If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. (9) If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (10) If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. God is just to forgive our sin when we fail if we confess our sin to God. If we say we have not sin we are a liar and the truth is not in us. I was teaching a Bible study one time when a lady clearly said she never sinned. Not long ago I seen on a discovery show where a Moslem said she could not understand why God was punishing her because she had not sinned. Her punishment she thought was that she gave birth to Siamese twins. How sad for those that know not the gospel and the fact we all make mistakes. God can and will forgive us if we ask. Our job is to ask and continue to walk in faith with Jesus. So if we are walking with the Spirit of God our desire is to live for Jesus, because He died for us. We recognize we are not perfect, but our goaled should be to live a life pleasing to Him. 1 Peter 1:13-25 KJV (13) Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; (14) As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance: (15) But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; (16) Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy. (17) And if ye call on the Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to every man's work, pass the time of your sojourning here in fear: (18) Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; (19) But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: (20) Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you, (21) Who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God. (22) Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently: (23) Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever. (24) For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away: (25) But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you. Basically what John is saying is we are called to live holy because God is Holy and He has called us. Wow personal invitation to a life pleasing to God. We are each called by God to do His will. Romans 8:10-17 KJV (10) And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. (11) But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you. (12) Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. (13) For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. (14) For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. (15) For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. (16) The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: (17) And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together. We did not receive a Spirit of bondage but the Spirit of adoption to where we call God Father. So we suffer with Him then we may also be glorified together with him. In other words we have the hope of eternal life with Christ Jesus. When we carry on the work of Christ through the empowerment of the Holy Spirit we are God's children. We become God's children when we believe and then we learn slow to obey God by walking after the Spirit of God. God changes our life on a daily bases. It is often a slow process we see but God slowly molds us into His image. |
