Love Lesson
Lesson 23: by turtle

John 8:28-32 KJV
28  Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself; but as my Father
hath taught me, I speak these things.
29  And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him.
30  As he spake these words, many believed on him.
31  Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;
32  And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

In verse 28 Christ is talking about his death. Being lift up on the cross.  When He died they would know because of the earthquake and the veil being
ripped in the temple. Being lifted up also was a parallel to the story of Moses where God had Him put a pole of a serpent up and if a snake bit the
Israelites do to sin and the Israelites would look at the pole they would not die.

Numbers 21:7-9
7  Therefore the people came to Moses, and said, We have sinned, for we have spoken against the LORD, and against thee; pray unto the LORD, that he take
away the serpents from us. And Moses prayed for the people.
8  And the LORD said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh
upon it, shall live.
9  And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass,
he lived.

Christ often gave reference to something they did understand yet they were unseeing. Some of the Jews would believe what He spoke.

29  And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him.
30  As he spake these words, many believed on him.
31  Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;
32  And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

Here is a simple truth for us today in Verse 31=32  The simple fact is if we believe we must continue to follow Jesus. If we believe that Jesus is the
Savior of the world we must continue to follow Him. If we follow Him following in His footsteps we are His disciples and if we do not we are not his.
It is not enough to just pray the sinner pray and think that it I can go about and live my life anyway I want. To be truly born again it is a life change. It is
a decision to follow Him where ever He leads. And though that step may not be the first one you take it is a process that begins when you first get
saved. You begin to learn to yield to God's way. And to those that were sincere when you accept Christ but feel you have slipped far from His grasp
don’t give up just turn your life back over to him and admit your failures and start living for Jesus each and everyday. We all fail at sometime but
Christ is there to lift us up and help us to stand firm in our faith. These slips and falls show how human we really are at times.

Christ sets us free from sin and death by dying on the cross for our sins. We will no longer taste death. Christ is truth and He sets us free if we believe.
We must continue to follow in His footsteps if we truly believe in Him as Lord and Savior.

John 8:33-36
33  They answered him, We be Abraham's seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free?
34  Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.
35  And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever.
36  If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.

No different then the world today they Jews wanted to know how could Christ make them free. They were not slaves to anyone. They were their own
master so to speak. Christ makes it clear we are all a slave to sin. He came to set us free from sin. We are in bondage to sin because we were born
into a sinful world. Without Christ as Savior we are still in bondage to sin. That is why Christ came to set us free from sin.

John 8:37-40
37  I know that ye are Abraham's seed; but ye seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you.
38  I speak that which I have seen with my Father: and ye do that which ye have seen with your father.
39  They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham's children, ye would do the works of Abraham.
40  But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I have heard of God: this did not Abraham.

Christ responds to what is in their hearts. He speaks the truth that if they were truly Abraham's children they would not do what they do. They would
believe who He is. Abraham was a man of faith. He believed God and followed Him. The Jews that question lack faith. They did not understand the
words Christ spoke because they were blinded to the truth of who He is.  The Jews did not like what he said so they sought a way to kill Him.

John 8:40-46
40  But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I have heard of God: this did not Abraham.
41  Ye do the deeds of your father. Then said they to him, We be not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God.
42  Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me.
43  Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word.
44  Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is
no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
45  And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not.
46  Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me?

Christ is very straightforward with the Jews. Makes it clear they are not God children because they do not believe who He is and they do not what
God the Father tells them to do.  Christ continues to explain they are the devil's children because they speak lies. The Jews were suppose to point the
way to God but instead they point to laws and rules one must follow and yet broke them. Very hypocritical as even today some that call themselves
Christians are. We have to remember we are not responsible for how others believe or do, we are responsible for what we do and say. Each person
individually must decide for themselves and live according to their will. If their will is to yield to God and to believe in Christ and to follow Him it is His
choice and if someone chooses to follow their own will and plans that is their choice. Do you believe Christ is truth? It is your choice I and others can
not make it for you.

John 8:47-51
47  He that is of God heareth God's words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God.
48  Then answered the Jews, and said unto him, Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a devil?
49  Jesus answered, I have not a devil; but I honour my Father, and ye do dishonour me.
50  And I seek not mine own glory: there is one that seeketh and judgeth.
51  Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death.

Simple fact those that hear God word are His and those who do not are not His. We can read to someone the word of God but unless it takes root in
their hearts they are not God's. You can not make someone believe. This of course makes the Jews angry because they call Samaritan which is really
saying he is not a Jew or not one of them and in a since they are right He is not one of them yet He was born a Jew and yet the Son of God.

Christ also gives a special promise to them in verse 51 if they keep what he said they would not see death. All that believe and do God will, will not
see a spiritual death but might see physical death. Christ is talking spiritually they are thinking physically in the Jews next response.

John 8:52-53
52  Then said the Jews unto him, Now we know that thou hast a devil. Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and thou sayest, If a man keep my saying, he shall
never taste of death.
53  Art thou greater than our father Abraham, which is dead? and the prophets are dead: whom makest thou thyself?

The Jews hear lack knowledge and belief who Christ is they do not understand He is the Messiah they long for. They do not understand Jesus is God.

John 8:54-56
54  Jesus answered, If I honour myself, my honour is nothing: it is my Father that honoureth me; of whom ye say, that he is your God:
55  Yet ye have not known him; but I know him: and if I should say, I know him not, I shall be a liar like unto you: but I know him, and keep his saying.
56  Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad.

Abraham understood Christ was coming, God promised Him long ago. And though He had not the promise at that time He still believed. The prophets
of old understood a Messiah was coming and foretold who He was. Yet even has Christ stood among the Jews they were blinded to who He was.

John 8:57-59
57  Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham?
58  Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.
59  Then took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.

Jews began to argue again and say you are not even fifty. How can you say you know Abraham. And Christ simple reply is he was before Abraham.
This made the crowd mad because He claim to be God, yet throughout the passage Christ claims to be God. Christ slips away from the temple before
they could stone Him.  Christ is truth, it was not yet time for Christ to die for all man's sin. So He escapes once again. Until the hour comes for Christ
to be betrayed He will be sought to be killed and not be able to take Him.
