The Prophecy Revealed In Matthew
Lesson Six: by turtle

One of the major question about Jesus Ministry did He teach anything that was not already taught in Scripture. Now one of
Jesus most famous sermons is called the Beatitudes or Sermon on the Mount. We will look at it from Old Testament
comparison to examine if Jesus taught the same message.

Matthew 5:1-2 KJV
(1)  And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him:
(2)  And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,

A teacher or prophet taught where ever there were people. Often one may think they only taught in the temple, but they taught
wherever God sent them. Prophets went before kings, before the people. Each preaching the kingdom of God is at hand as well
as the blessings of the Lord God. First verse in Jesus sermon is:

Matthew 5:3 KJV
(3)  Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
\
To be poor in spirit is not to be without knowledge of God. It is to be humble before the Lord. This was taught in the Old
Testament. It is taught in the context of repentance before the Lord.

Psalms 34:18 KJV
(18)  The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.

Job 33:27-28 KJV
(27)  He looketh upon men, and if any say, I have sinned, and perverted that which was right, and it profited me not;
(28)  He will deliver his soul from going into the pit, and his life shall see the light.

Without the fulfillment of the gospel it not so easily seen that one can escape death of the pit. However on will see the light.
Light here meaning God. There is a belief in Old Testament of heaven.

Genesis 17:7-8 KJV
(7)  And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting
covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee.
(8)  And I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger, all the land of Canaan, for an
everlasting possession; and I will be their God.

Hebrews 11:8-10. 16 KJV
(8)  By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and
he went out, not knowing whither he went.
(9)  By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs
with him of the same promise:
(10)  For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.

(16)  But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he
hath prepared for them a city.

Abraham looked for a future home beyond the physical realm of the Promised Land. Now with just a few verses I shown that
the kingdom of God was preached. Jerusalem was suppose to be example of that Kingdom, however when man gets hold of
what God establishes it becomes corrupt. It puts a new meaning on the fact that all men are evil.

Now let us continue to verse four of Matthew five:

Matthew 5:4 KJV
(4)  Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

Mourning is one of the most normal things in human life when you loose a friend or family member. It is an ache in one heart.
It ache that Job felt when he lost everything He had. Yet Job was restored. This is the same hope we too can have that God will
restore that hurt with blessings.

Psalms 30:10-11 KJV
(10)  Hear, O LORD, and have mercy upon me: LORD, be thou my helper.
(11)  Thou hast turned for me my mourning into dancing: thou hast put off my sackcloth, and girded me with gladness;

Now the next verse repeats the first verse about humbleness, but uses the word meekness.

Matthew 5:5 KJV
(5)  Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

We know with out repentance when the Jerusalem descends to earth we will be gone. We will be past away. Meek will inherit
the earth.

Psalms 37:9-11 KJV
(9)  For evildoers shall be cut off: but those that wait upon the LORD, they shall inherit the earth.
(10)  For yet a little while, and the wicked shall not be: yea, thou shalt diligently consider his place, and it shall not be.
(11)  But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.

Now verse six speak of hungering after God. Desiring to be filled. When we seek God, He desires to fill us with His Spirit with
His love, with His hope.

Matthew 5:6 KJV
(6)  Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

Isaiah 41:17-18 KJV
(17)  When the poor and needy seek water, and there is none, and their tongue faileth for thirst, I the LORD will hear them, I
the God of Israel will not forsake them.
(18)  I will open rivers in high places, and fountains in the midst of the valleys: I will make the wilderness a pool of water, and
the dry land springs of water.

Psalms 107:9 KJV
(9)  For he satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness.

God desires to fill our hearts to satisfy our thirst. However when we are really thirsty that water God supplies never runs out.

Now verse 7 of Matthew 5 deals with fact to show mercy is to gain mercy. I be honest how much mercy can one show another
person. If we are to be Christ like then we need to show mercy. Mercy to all those around. Some things in life is easy to forgive
and other things not so easy. In fact some mercy takes the gift of God.

Matthew 5:7 KJV
(7)  Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.

Proverbs 20:28 KJV
(28)  Mercy and truth preserve the king: and his throne is upholden by mercy.

Now these verse are not identical to each other. They do not have to be for a general teaching through scripture to be
established. If a king is merciful to his people he rules for a long time. Christ is our King and His rule still reigns. However God
also establishes earthly rule that demonstrate godly kingdoms. From time to time one does get bad leaders that have no mercy
on the weak and the poor. However Christ is example of mercy we should show. Israel’s kings were known to be merciful.

1 Kings 20:31 KJV
(31)  And his servants said unto him, Behold now, we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel are merciful kings: let us,
I pray thee, put sackcloth on our loins, and ropes upon our heads, and go out to the king of Israel: peradventure he will save thy
life.

Now let us continue to Matthew 5:8  Is having a pure heart covered in the Old Testament. Well I can remember a verse that
says all men are evil, but can any be pure of heart. Lets first look at Matthew. And then the Old Testament.

Matthew 5:8 KJV
(8)  Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.

The psalmist recognized that God would have to be the one that would make his heart pure. We ourselves can not purify our
own hearts. God has to do the cleaning.

Psalms 51:10 KJV
(10)  Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.

Proverbs 20:9-12 KJV
(9)  Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin?
(10)  Divers weights, and divers measures, both of them are alike abomination to the LORD.
(11)  Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work be pure, and whether it be right.
(12)  The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the LORD hath made even both of them.

Now the next verse in Matthew 5:9 speaks of the peacemakers.

Matthew 5:9 KJV
(9)  Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

Psalms 34:14-16 KJV
(14)  Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it.
(15)  The eyes of the LORD are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry.
(16)  The face of the LORD is against them that do evil, to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth.

Psalms 37:11 KJV
(11)  But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.

If you pursuit is peace then you also are in pursuit of Christ. If you are in pursuit of God you are in pursuit of righteousness by
faith. If you are believe in Jesus you are a child of God. And if you are a child of God that seeks peace you will inherit the
kingdom of God.

Last three verse we are going to link today is on persecution. No one wants to think about persecution. In fact to be a Christian
often means one is persecuted if one is speaking the truth of God.

Matthew 5:10-12 KJV
(10)  Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
(11)  Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my
sake.
(12)  Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before
you.

Deuteronomy 30:6-8 KJV
(6)  And the LORD thy God will circumcise thine heart, and the heart of thy seed, to love the LORD thy God with all thine
heart, and with all thy soul, that thou mayest live.
(7)  And the LORD thy God will put all these curses upon thine enemies, and on them that hate thee, which persecuted thee.
(8)  And thou shalt return and obey the voice of the LORD, and do all his commandments which I command thee this day.

Psalms 109:15-16 KJV
(15)  Let them be before the LORD continually, that he may cut off the memory of them from the earth.
(16)  Because that he remembered not to shew mercy, but persecuted the poor and needy man, that he might even slay the
broken in heart.

Psalms 119:161 KJV
(161)  SCHIN. Princes have persecuted me without a cause: but my heart standeth in awe of thy word.

Psalms 143:3-7 KJV
(3)  For the enemy hath persecuted my soul; he hath smitten my life down to the ground; he hath made me to dwell in
darkness, as those that have been long dead.
(4)  Therefore is my spirit overwhelmed within me; my heart within me is desolate.
(5)  I remember the days of old; I meditate on all thy works; I muse on the work of thy hands.
(6)  I stretch forth my hands unto thee: my soul thirsteth after thee, as a thirsty land. Selah.
(7)  Hear me speedily, O LORD: my spirit faileth: hide not thy face from me, lest I be like unto them that go down into the pit.

Persecution is talked about in Old and New Testament and Christ does warn His followers they will be persecuted. Why then
are we so surprised when trouble befalls a believer. However are job is clear our hearts need to be pure and humble before the
Lord in all matters. We must demonstrate the mercy of God to all people. We need to be the peacemaker. However it is only
through God grace we are able to do these things. It only by His power.

What Jesus taught is no different then what was spoken by the Lord to the prophets and kings of old. We will be continue with
the sermon of the mount next week. And though I did not go in great detail, I aspect you to go searching this week for more
examples of the beatitudes in scripture both Old and New Testament. Compare what is taught. God will bless your heart for
doing so.
