| Lesson 74: The Law Of The Old That Is Covered In The New Testament: Thieves On The Cross 4/6/2014 by turtle30c Matthew 27:33-44 KJV (33) And when they were come unto a place called Golgotha, that is to say, a place of a skull, (34) They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tasted thereof, he would not drink. (35) And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots. (36) And sitting down they watched him there; (37) And set up over his head his accusation written, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS. (38) Then were there two thieves crucified with him, one on the right hand, and another on the left. (39) And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads, (40) And saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself. If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross. (41) Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said, (42) He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him. (43) He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God. (44) The thieves also, which were crucified with him, cast the same in his teeth. The thieves on the cross are said to have mocked him, yet in Luke it is recorded that one thief defended Jesus. Two different stories and yet possible. To be a thief is worthy of death by Roman law. Jesus was being crucified because He claim to be the Son of God and a King/Lord. Now what one has to ask how can these two stories of the thieves be correct. It simple really. Peter denied Jesus even knowing who He was. It all possible that the mocking came before or after the defense. In order for Christ to die for all of us we all would have to deny who He is. Seldom do people who first here of Jesus receive Him as Lord and Savior, usually there is some prior knowledge before accepting Jesus as Savior. That means there is a time period of rejecting Jesus as Lord and Savior. There is a time of rejection of the Word of God, before one adherer’s to it. It takes time and it not instant. Those that receive Christ upon first hearing receive but even go through periods of rejection to the truth. Why because it is in our sin nature to reject God. It is only through His saving power that anyone is saved. When we come to the conclusion we have sinned and the only hope is God’s salvation plan through His Son. Through faith, through receiving Jesus. Jesus told the thief in Luke that defended him that he would be in paradise. Yet here we see two thieves both in denial to the point they are mocking Jesus. Mocking Jesus though they were receiving the same punishment. Thievery worth of death by the judgment of God, but not by the judgment of man because all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. God judgment for sin is death from the time of Adam. If all sin and all fall short then who are we to judge another, yet we are not exempt from making judgment to control society from becoming unproductive or chaotic like headhunters on island with no law, but to kill or be killed. To learn to live among each other even though we disagree is a polite way of deal with problems in society. It saying you have a right to your views if I disagree. You have a right to your sin if it does not effect me. You have a right to your chaos if you feel you must. Yet the world is much happier if you live in peace. Striving to live in peace, and not robbing others of their sanity. Robbing people of their purity. Robbing people of their innocence. Take from them their children in abuse, or the families through murder, abduction, adultery and covetness. Sin that is robbery of people. Jesus died for all of our sins. Yet He expected us to love others as ourselves. Jesus needed not to save Himself, but show the process of His Word, Sin and His Word applied through the cross. It is the story of cross of the suffering and pain for our misdoings that put Jesus on the cross. Yet in one since His own words nailed him to the cross. The story of rebuilding the temple in three days was enough. Yet all was a metaphor the leaders understood not. Christ innocents clearly seen, yet He was not understood for a purpose, so God’s will could be done. Dear Heavenly Father help us to live for you because you died for me. Dying for all sin of humanity because of original sin. In Jesus precious name, Amen. http://www.turtle30cshell.com _ |
