| Lesson 27: The Law Of The Old That Is Covered In the New Testament: Taking The Lord God Name In Vain 2/18/2014 by turtle Exodus 20:5-7 KJV (5) Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; (6) And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments. (7) Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain. One is not to take God’s name in vain. Most people probably take that one for granted and in today’s society many take God’ s name in vain. But what does it really mean, to take God’s name in vain. It is to demoralize the name of God or making the name of God worthless or little value. I hate to think how many make God’s name of little value or use it without meaning. Even Christian people do it when they promise something that they are enable to back it themselves. God’s name and Christ name as become a common by word in the cursing industry. It is manufactured even in the heathen community, as well as the community of the saints. No one realizing what it truly means to take God’s name in vain anymore. To use it with little value. To make God a laughing stock or gainsaying. People use God’s name to declare war, or justice for their own intentions including in legal battles, or politics. God belongs in respect of the religious and spiritual realm of society. The battle we wage not always spiritual but often having spiritual significance. To ask God do I go and fight or not is done to determine favor of God, only to have to deal with what if you fighting a believer on the opposite side of the fence and you win. Are they abandon by God and use God’s name in cursing because of defeat. I have to ask do you praise God in the morning when the sun is shinning, what about through the heavy storms of life and in the evening as the shadow of night comes. No one does it perfectly. I stand in judgment as well to never say I never misused God’s name would be hypocritical. I will not justify my own sin. I can not. Neither can anyone else. God’s name is to be reverenced. Yet like anything done wrong it takes time to remove. Yet the blood of Jesus Christ covers all our sin, even those that dishonor God and all sin no matter what does dishonor the name of God. Yet no Christian walks in perfection, not because the power of God does not enable, it that human factor that causes us to falter and fail to look to God. Peter stood in the mist of the sea and the waves of began to surround him and he began to watch the sea and he began to sink. Yet Jesus did not leave him, but continue to stand there waiting for Peter to call out and the minute Peter cried out, Jesus lifted him out of the storm. One must become so focus on Jesus and not the things that anger us to where we sin more and more. The first sin begins when we take our focus off of Jesus and on the things of this world. The second is our response by what comes out of our mouth instead of saying Lord have mercy, one uses the Lord’s name in vain. This should not be church but it is. It should not be Christian, but it is. It should not be. To learn to trust in Jesus to look fully to Him and seeing His power in our life should be enough, but one can get complacent to the things of God that we fail to shout and say this is of God. Those raise in the church often know no difference between the church and the world, because their lives are surrounded by people from church community. If we step outside our shell for a moment we find the world has a different world view of God and a different take on life. They understand not the value of God or the love of God. The world understand not how a loving God can allow certain things to happen, they see not the protective hand on the church community when they see churches with sin that is offensive even to the heathen community. To them to take the Lord’s name in vain is a by word and word of reproach with no value to them. We all struggle with our faults and areas we know are a reproach to the Gospel of Christ, yet when we recognize them let us first ask for forgiveness and ask God to change us for His glory and honor. No matter the sin, no matter the problem let the world see the value of God in each believer today. Dear Heavenly Father, your people are only perfected through your grace and blood of Jesus for our sins. Help us to recognize areas where we need to change and improve in. In Jesus precious name, Amen. http://www.turtle30cshell.com _ |
