Lesson 64: The Law Of The Old Testament That Is Covered In The New Testament: The Fire Wood 3/27/2014

Numbers 15:32-41 KJV (32) And while the children of Israel were in the wilderness, they found a man that gathered sticks upon the sabbath day. (33) And they that found him gathering sticks brought him unto Moses and Aaron, and unto all the congregation. (34) And they put him in ward, because it was not declared what should be done to him. (35) And the LORD said unto Moses, The man shall be surely put to death: all the congregation shall stone him with stones without the camp. (36) And all the congregation brought him without the camp, and stoned him with stones, and he died; as the LORD commanded Moses. (37) And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, (38) Speak unto the children of Israel, and bid them that they make them fringes in the borders of their garments throughout their generations, and that they put upon the fringe of the borders a ribband of blue: (39) And it shall be unto you for a fringe, that ye may look upon it, and remember all the commandments of the LORD, and do them; and that ye seek not after your own heart and your own eyes, after which ye use to go a whoring: (40) That ye may remember, and do all my commandments, and be holy unto your God. (41) I am the LORD your God, which brought you out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: I am the LORD your God.
To be part of a Holy order of God and to follow that orders rules is and can be a challenge. Israel was called to such a holy order of God. Given a list of rules that other nation’s were not given and some laws were given from the beginning before the Ten Commandments were established. Yet there were laws to all nations as well as to His elect. Keeping the Sabbath Holy was one that was established. Many people still only work five to six days a week because of the Sabbath. Yet most would say they do not take people to court over someone breaking the Sabbath, or not to court to put one to death.
The rule was that anyone breaking the laws of God were worthy of death. Sounds strict until you think back to when Adam and Eve fell in the garden and their sin cost them paradise. If you played Simon Sez growing up you know that the game requires you to sit out if you do not follow Simon. It seems unjust and unfair for one mistake, but children learn it the rule and they follow hoping to catch someone other then themselves breaking the rules.
Israel caught a man in sin gathering only fire wood for a fire. I wonder why they did not just bring this man to their own fire and not warn him what the law was? The people took him before Moses and said see what he did. Lord the told Moses to kill him for gathering fire wood. Moses did not plead for this man’s life, but the elders and him had the man killed, I wonder if it was on the Sabbath that they killed him, scripture does not say. Yet to enforce a law is to enforce rules. Our government if they followed all the laws of our land would find more in jail then we already do. Yet each breaking of a law causes problems. The less report the more lawless our land becomes. Yet no one blames another for something they do themselves. Had Israel become the Holy nation God desired, or tattle tales.
One has to decide how they feel about rules. How they feel about laws of justice. If they are willing to follow a law even if it hurts themselves to do so. Most would agree if you agree to the rules then you agree not to break them. The minor offense seems obsessive to our world, yet to God’s people it is justified, to keep control. Yet God would break His own rules by giving His Son for our sacrifice for payment for our failure to obey Him. His word being that there would be no more sacrifice for sin to all that would trust in Him. That making the law abolished.
Yet the law of enforced in the days of Moses, because people did not believe God, or desire to keep the laws. Society without obedience to the rules would perish, because of corruption that would continue because of continual broken rules. That why the need for military, our police, judges and our lawyers, to make sure laws our enforced to keep society from corruption. Yet the Sabbath day is a rule of God not a rule of man. God’s rules are much hard if nothing more to prove our inability to obey God’s laws. That why we need God’s saving from His laws. That why Jesus died for you and me. God’s wrath or God’s mercy. Man gathering wood found God’s wrath. He had no respect for the laws of God.
Dear Heavenly Father thank you for teaching us the enforcement of laws, as well as forgiveness of law breaking. No one could keep all your ways and that is when you applied your grace. In Jesus precious name, Amen.
