Deuteronomy 5:13-15 KJV
(13)  Six days thou shalt labour, and do all thy work:
(14)  But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it
thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, nor
thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thine ox, nor thine ass, nor
any of thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates; that thy
manservant and thy maidservant may rest as well as thou.
(15)  And remember that thou wast a servant in the land of Egypt,
and that the LORD thy God brought thee out thence through a mighty
hand and by a stretched out arm: therefore the LORD thy God
commanded thee to keep the sabbath day.

How often cultures are different around the world. In Spain and
Mexico people take a siesta after lunch or mid day. Westerns seem
to display this nap taking as part of culture because of the heat, but it
was a tradition in Spain before it was ever so in Mexico. Time of
resting is not unusual in many cultures, however some cultures work
longer hours then Americans. And some culture take breaks when we
work through. Yet there an old saying when in Rome do as the
Roman’s do. So it is whether a stranger in a land or not, you adapt to
the culture even if it seems a little extreme.

Gentiles were expect under Israel leadership to take a day of rest
called the Sabbath. It was not just for the Jew, but it was for
everyone within the borders of the camp of Israel. Image not knowing
the culture. And your camel needing food, or your donkey is stuck in
a ditch, your out of luck till the next day. Yet it was so, that culture of
Sabbath was such that everyone rested on day seven. No one
cooked, no one did chores, no one work.

Why would the day of rest become in vogue in the days of Israel and
not prior like in the days of Abraham. Though it speaks of God
resting after six days of creating in Genesis, the Sabbath is not
commanded until the journey in the wilderness. One might reason the
law was put in place because of extremeness of the journey across
the desert and the heat. Sooner or later in conditions of the journey
one would need a break. And the only way to make some people rest
is to enforce a law of rest.

America has no law of rest, not even holidays anymore, except for
federal employees. Has our country gone to the point there is no
break for their people, no our labor laws protect the working man.
Provides time off for the working man. Yet it not always in coincide
with religious days. So has culture dictates we do as Rome, and give
honor to God day of rest on another day. We can even worship on
another day, but praise really suppose to be on our lips continually.
Even perfect praise through a crisis has to be learned. Even praise
through good and bad times must be learned, by the Holy Spirit.
When we examine what is required of the Lord, we need to
remember our culture, but remember it possible to take time for
worship, praise and fellowship too. God’s people journey in one
direction together needed a set schedule to follow. If claim today to
walk by the Spirit we all praise the Lord together, mourn together and
shout hallelujah together.

Dear Heavenly Father let us rest for the weariness of life journey,
help us to worship you in perfect praise from our hearts in unison with
fellow believers whether it be Sunday or not.  In Jesus precious
name, Amen.
