| Lesson 43: The Law Of The Old That Is Covered In The New Testament: Do Not Swear 3/6/2014 by turtle Matthew 5:33-37 KJV (33) Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths: (34) But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God's throne: (35) Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King. (36) Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black. (37) But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil. I think the hardest thing to grasp is Peter was swearing when he betrayed Jesus, after being taught not to swear. No not really. Jesus was strict in his teaching, Teaching us what we should and should not do, yet at the same time having mercy on the believer and those who repented. The law of liberty is great among God’s people. Yet when it comes to swearing there is a reason not to swear. Main reason God said not too. Second you can not change a thing of God’s throne, nor on the earth, or government or your head, so swearing by something you have no power over it. You might today be able to change your hair color but it is not a permanent change generally. The point is you can not command something to change it natural order of events. You can change things you can not control. You can not swear by things that can change in a moment of time. There no guarantees of these things or what will occur. It is like saying when tomorrow comes I will do this or that. Tomorrow may never come. We make promises that may never come because we have hope it will, but then do not do them. A child as a ball game and the workaholic father promises to show for the game, only to later break the promise. The child goes away from the game disappointed and upset his father was not there. God is not a child that if you break the promise that he had to learn to cope with the disappointment. God knew before you made the vow whether you keep it. The problem is you did not see your inability or your ability to do what you said. Repent and go on. The point is one can not make promises they can not or will not keep, it is a lie if you do. It is something that does not please God. I be truthful this is one we all probably done in our life. It one that we seldom think on being a sin. Why point out this sin. Why bother with vows to God or to people. Our word is important. It is one thing that is valuable in human relations as well as a good relationship with God. I say Lord I want to serve you, then I need to be doing that. If I promised to show up on time I better do so, unless something happens to change it. Yet we all do not walk by these rules. I seen business people that could not prosper because they could not show up on time. They could not get ahead. Fact is consistency is important. Our word of yes and no is important. It hard to be consistent in this world. Yet it something that establishes us of who we are. God desires us to be people of noble character. Dear Heavenly Father help us not to swear by things we can not change, and let our yeas and nays be consistent in our life. In Jesus precious name, Amen. http://www.turtle30cshell.com _ |
