Women in the Bible
Lesson Thirty-one: by turtle30c

Jesus must of been an interesting son. Though little is known about Jesus childhood
according to scripture, one must wonder when did Christ ministry really begin. Mary and
Joseph being fully human must of wonder about this child. He was unusual. Not afraid to talk
to religious leaders as if He was one of them. Let’s take a look at Christ only recorded
childhood experience in the Bible.

Luke 2:41-45 KJV
(41)  Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the passover.
(42)  And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the
feast.
(43)  And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in
Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it.
(44)  But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day's journey; and they
sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance.
(45)  And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking him.

Now Mary and Joseph went every year to the Passover, but not until Jesus was twelve years
old did He get to go with them. Joseph and Mary after traveling a day they realize their son is
not with them or with any of their friends. How Joseph must of tried to reassure Mary that
Jesus must be okay. After all He was the Messiah. Yet they went in search of their son.

Luke 2:46-48 KJV
(46)  And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the
midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions.
(47)  And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers.
(48)  And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast
thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing.

Mary and Joseph were astonished when they found him. I often have wonder why were they
surprised at seeing him talking with the doctors and hearing his responses as well as his
understanding. Maybe it had not occurred to them because of they came from a priestly
family. Old Testament would of been discussed in the home as well as at their local
synagogue. And of course they knew he was God’s only begotten Son. Yet Mary and Joseph
responded like any parents would asking Jesus shy he made them worry where he was. It was
not time for Jesus to minister. Yet He minister as a boy for a day in temple to his elder. Jesus
response is even more remarkable.

Luke 2:49-52 KJV
(49)  And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my
Father's business?
(50)  And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them.
(51)  And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his
mother kept all these sayings in her heart.
(52)  And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.

Mary and Joseph did not understand what Jesus meant that he was about His Father’s
business. At this point had they forgotten who Son Jesus was. Or was it the nature instinct of
earthly parents to wonder and marvel at all their son said. After all they were raising him up.
The Bible makes it clear that Jesus grew up in wisdom and stature and favor of both God and
man. Meaning He was highly respected. He earned this respect to men on his own merit.

No doubt children go off and play and run around the neighborhood. You know some of
them kids that get highly on your nerves or remind you when you were that young. They earn
their respect in the neighborhood by what they do and say. They learn from many influences
today. Not just their parents, but school, other adults and children. Everyone is influencing
and molding a child’s young life. Teaching him or her value or none valuable things. They are
after all they are people to. Today kids often amaze me like they do many of us. They seem
more educated and more knowledgeable then any of my friends or I was at that young age.
Watching kids grow up and then having families and careers of their own can be quite
exciting. Watching their parents hope for the best for their kids and even sometimes bending
over backwards because they love their kids.

Though I maybe only an observe of everyday child rearing, I have had my experience with
kids as well. And know the one thing they need is space and love and understanding. To grow
and explore their world and not be afraid to grow.  Jesus was the exceptional child, the one
every parents wants to have. Yet despite this one must love their children. Watching the
television and seeing Obama’s send their kids off to school their first day, made me appreciate
the fact as a child I did not have the big stereo type of family, though I had many first days at
new schools, but to have the press come to school with you, wow. Hats off to those two.
Remember to pray for our children and our nations children. They are the future of our great
land.
