Lesson 38: by turtle
Genesis 20:1-7 KJV (1) And Abraham journeyed from thence toward the south country, and dwelled between Kadesh and Shur, and sojourned in Gerar. (2) And Abraham said of Sarah his wife, She is my sister: and Abimelech king of Gerar sent, and took Sarah. (3) But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night, and said to him, Behold, thou art but a dead man, for the woman which thou hast taken; for she is a man's wife. (4) But Abimelech had not come near her: and he said, Lord, wilt thou slay also a righteous nation? (5) Said he not unto me, She is my sister? and she, even she herself said, He is my brother: in the integrity of my heart and innocency of my hands have I done this. (6) And God said unto him in a dream, Yea, I know that thou didst this in the integrity of thy heart; for I also withheld thee from sinning against me: therefore suffered I thee not to touch her. (7) Now therefore restore the man his wife; for he is a prophet, and he shall pray for thee, and thou shalt live: and if thou restore her not, know thou that thou shalt surely die, thou, and all that are thine.
Marriage is a sacred union between husband and wife. God ordain women and men to marry for procreation to have offspring and to multiply. A sin is a sin if you cause someone else to sin. Speaking only half truth could be consider a sin when in would cause someone else to sin. Abraham and Sarah had told King Abimelech they were brother and sister. This however was so they were actually half brother and sister. Yet first and foremost they were husband and wife in the tradition of the land.
This is a good time to bring up holiness before we go on. Men and woman sin. They do not always obey God and are put in situations that may not be of God. Depending on your spouse what you do. First of all let me explain was it a sin for Abraham and Sarah to marry each other. According to the law of Priest or the Levitical book it was a sin to marry your brother or sister. Levitical chapter 18. Yet we also find that Abraham and Sarah was before the law. So they knew not the law. Well God would not cause man to sin. This is correct we see this in this chapter 20 of Genesis when it comes to Abimelech and this was sin before the law. God provides Abimelech with a way of escape, by giving him a dream to warn him. Abraham was in the chapter consider righteous man before God and a prophet. Abraham had faith and it was counted as righteousness. Faith being the key factor. Though we all be guilty of sin God looks at faith as righteous through out the entire age from Adam to now.
Romans 4:1-8 KJV (1) What shall we say then that Abraham our father, as pertaining to the flesh, hath found? (2) For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory; but not before God. (3) For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness. (4) Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt. (5) But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness. (6) Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works, (7) Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered. (8) Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin.
There is sin that God does not hold against any man that has faith. When we choose to believe God and obey Him, He forgives our sin. It is our unbelief that gets us in trouble with God. Abraham feared he would die if he told the truth about Sarah and him being husband and wife. Sarah loved Abraham enough to go along with the half truth. Yet they were caught with the half truth. For God told Abimelech that Abraham had sinned and that Sarah was his wife. God told Abimelech not to worry about it that why he told him to keep him from sinning.
Now Abimelech question Abraham and Sarah.
Genesis 20:8-13 KJV (8) Therefore Abimelech rose early in the morning, and called all his servants, and told all these things in their ears: and the men were sore afraid. (9) Then Abimelech called Abraham, and said unto him, What hast thou done unto us? and what have I offended thee, that thou hast brought on me and on my kingdom a great sin? thou hast done deeds unto me that ought not to be done. (10) And Abimelech said unto Abraham, What sawest thou, that thou hast done this thing? (11) And Abraham said, Because I thought, Surely the fear of God is not in this place; and they will slay me for my wife's sake. (12) And yet indeed she is my sister; she is the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother; and she became my wife. (13) And it came to pass, when God caused me to wander from my father's house, that I said unto her, This is thy kindness which thou shalt shew unto me; at every place whither we shall come, say of me, He is my brother.
Abimelech find out that Abraham and Sarah did not lie but just did not tell the whole truth. And for this reason Abimelech choose to forgive as well as bless them.
Genesis 20:14-18 KJV (14) And Abimelech took sheep, and oxen, and menservants, and womenservants, and gave them unto Abraham, and restored him Sarah his wife. (15) And Abimelech said, Behold, my land is before thee: dwell where it pleaseth thee. (16) And unto Sarah he said, Behold, I have given thy brother a thousand pieces of silver: behold, he is to thee a covering of the eyes, unto all that are with thee, and with all other: thus she was reproved. (17) So Abraham prayed unto God: and God healed Abimelech, and his wife, and his maidservants; and they bare children. (18) For the LORD had fast closed up all the wombs of the house of Abimelech, because of Sarah Abraham's wife.
Abraham interceded in Abimelech and his families behalf. Acting as a high priest before God. Abraham is example of Christ interceding before the Father in our behalf. He intercedes for us when we sin against God after being saved.
1 John 2:1-3 KJV (1) My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: (2) And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. (3) And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.
Romans 8:34 KJV (34) Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.
1 Timothy 2:5 KJV (5) For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;
Galatians 3:20 KJV (20) Now a mediator is not a mediator of one, but God is one.
And so there is no confusion Christ is still God though He be our intercessor. For God the Father calls Christ God.
Hebrews 1:8 KJV (8) But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom.
Though Christ sits at the right hand of the Father, He is still God.
Psalms 2:7-12 KJV (7) I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee. (8) Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession. (9) Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel. (10) Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth. (11) Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling. (12) Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.
The non believers would come through Christ Jesus to the Father. The Son having a distinct purpose as part of the God head. Each of the God head working as one and is one in three person’s yet we see them as individuals. For their is only one God and one mediator. Kind of like our laws. The judge and police officer. The judge can condemn but the police officer can act as an intercessor before the court as well as bring arrest you for wrong doing and even give a person a ticket executing judgment. God the Father makes a way of escape from judgment, decides if someone has faith and then also can over look a transgression. They are one and the same. For after all in Isaiah 9:6 KJV (For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.) Christ is called the everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace and my favorite currently Mighty God.
The fact is will you believe and accept Christ as Lord and God today. If you will just pray and ask God to forgive you of your sins and ask Him to come in your heart and remember to thank Him for saving you. Well Abraham and Sarah ever have a baby well tune in next week.
