Chapter 21 of John
Questions
1. What was the disciples reaction to the appearance of Christ?
John 21:4-7 KJV 4 But when the morning was now come, Jesus stood on the shore: but the disciples knew not that it was Jesus. 5 Then Jesus saith unto them, Children, have ye any meat? They answered him, No. 6 And he said unto them, Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and ye shall find. They cast therefore, and now they were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes. 7 Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved saith unto Peter, It is the Lord. Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he girt his fisher's coat unto him, (for he was naked,) and did cast himself into the sea.
It always fascinates me that the disciples did not recognize Jesus immediately though they understood he was risen. I often wonder if they were still unsure of all that took place. But has soon as they realized who it was they told Peter and he jumps out of the boat and goes to Jesus..
2. What did Christ ask Peter? Christ ask Peter Three times if He loved Him. Each time He answered Yes. That is Christ question to us that believe in Him. There are certain things that are clear if you love Christ you will desire to obey him.
John 15:12-14 12 This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you. 13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. 14 Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.
If you love Jesus you will desire to love others. It does take time to learn to love and God is gracious to teach each and everyone of us that believe. He teaches us to forgive because he forgives us. Teaches us to share with others that are less fortunate then us or needs our help. Those that do not know God need our help.
3. What does it mean to feed lambs, sheep and sheep in verses 15-17? Why did he ask three times you think?
I got curious one day when I noticed that Christ used the word Lamb then the word sheep then the word sheep again each time Christ asked Peter if he loved Him. Take a look
John 21:15-17 15 So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs. 16 He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep. 17 He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.
Sheep represent God's people. Lambs represent new in believers. Sheep represent believers on the meat of the word and the word sheep again represents the whole flock of believers. Christ was telling Peter if you love me you will feed my people. Believers need to be feed with the word of God. Christ had trained Peter for the job of feeding those who would believe and those who already believed. Christ was telling Peter if you love me you will spread my love for all people. That is exactly what Peter did. We to if we love Christ need to spread the word of Christ love for all mankind. Will you help spread the word that Jesus saves, that he died and rose again on the third day for our sins.
4. Peter seem concerned about how John would die what was Christ response? Often times do we not wonder about others what should our response be?
Peter was distressed after Christ explained how he would die.
John 21:18 18 Verily, verily, I say unto thee, When thou wast young, thou girdedst thyself, and walkedst whither thou wouldest: but when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee, and carry thee whither thou wouldest not.
Peter died later on a cross just like Jesus except for the fact he was hung upside down. Peter told them he was unworthy to hang the same way and to hang him upside-down
Then Peter ask a question concerning another disciple that was with them.
.John 21:20-23 20 Then Peter, turning about, seeth the disciple whom Jesus loved following; which also leaned on his breast at supper, and said, Lord, which is he that betrayeth thee? 21 Peter seeing him saith to Jesus, Lord, and what shall this man do? 22 Jesus saith unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? follow thou me. 23 Then went this saying abroad among the brethren, that that disciple should not die: yet Jesus said not unto him, He shall not die; but, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee?
Peter was curious what would happen to his fellow disciple. But Christ made it quiet clear when he said “If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? It should not be his concern what happens to others that follow Christ. Peter concern was to love as Christ loved him. Simple fact we can not worry about others but do what God would have us do. Follow Christ and his leadership. Who do you follow? Do you keep your focus on Christ or everyone else in the church or body of believers. Our focus needs to be on Jesus.
This ends the Bible study on Love Lessonst for now. But we will continue talking about Christ love for us through out the coming year. Please share Christ with others and He has command us with Love and not hate or anger.
