Jeremiah 34:8-22 KJV
(8)  This is the word that came unto Jeremiah from the LORD,
after that the king Zedekiah had made a covenant with all the
people which were at Jerusalem, to proclaim liberty unto them;
(9)  That every man should let his manservant, and every man
his maidservant, being an Hebrew or an Hebrewess, go free;
that none should serve himself of them, to wit, of a Jew his
brother.
(10)  Now when all the princes, and all the people, which had
entered into the covenant, heard that every one should let his
manservant, and every one his maidservant, go free, that none
should serve themselves of them any more, then they obeyed,
and let them go.
(11)  But afterward they turned, and caused the servants and
the handmaids, whom they had let go free, to return, and
brought them into subjection for servants and for handmaids.
(12)  Therefore the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah from
the LORD, saying,
(13)  Thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel; I made a
covenant with your fathers in the day that I brought them forth
out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondmen, saying,
(14)  At the end of seven years let ye go every man his brother
an Hebrew, which hath been sold unto thee; and when he hath
served thee six years, thou shalt let him go free from thee: but
your fathers hearkened not unto me, neither inclined their ear.
(15)  And ye were now turned, and had done right in my sight,
in proclaiming liberty every man to his neighbour; and ye had
made a covenant before me in the house which is called by my
name:
(16)  But ye turned and polluted my name, and caused every
man his servant, and every man his handmaid, whom ye had
set at liberty at their pleasure, to return, and brought them into
subjection, to be unto you for servants and for handmaids.
(17)  Therefore thus saith the LORD; Ye have not hearkened
unto me, in proclaiming liberty, every one to his brother, and
every man to his neighbour: behold, I proclaim a liberty for you,
saith the LORD, to the sword, to the pestilence, and to the
famine; and I will make you to be removed into all the kingdoms
of the earth.
(18)  And I will give the men that have transgressed my
covenant, which have not performed the words of the covenant
which they had made before me, when they cut the calf in
twain, and passed between the parts thereof,
(19)  The princes of Judah, and the princes of Jerusalem, the
eunuchs, and the priests, and all the people of the land, which
passed between the parts of the calf;
(20)  I will even give them into the hand of their enemies, and
into the hand of them that seek their life: and their dead bodies
shall be for meat unto the fowls of the heaven, and to the
beasts of the earth.
(21)  And Zedekiah king of Judah and his princes will I give into
the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of them that seek
their life, and into the hand of the king of Babylon's army, which
are gone up from you.
(22)  Behold, I will command, saith the LORD, and cause them
to return to this city; and they shall fight against it, and take it,
and burn it with fire: and I will make the cities of Judah a
desolation without an inhabitant.

I often think I could choose a better passage for Martin Luther
King Day, and yet sometimes we need the consequences of
past mistakes in history to understand the process even our
own country has had to deal with for centuries. To enslave one’
s brother, one need to set one free. Yet slavery different
because you buy a person to liberate them you have to
consider that they paying their debt to you would come to a end
when the purchase price was return as long as cost of
expenses to the road of freedom.

Those that enslaved because of war, because of captivity was
to set those they enslaved free after seven years. They were
to give them liberty. In was law that was in place sense the trip
out of Egypt. Yet as all laws go there were times when
religious law was not practice or in vogue in a society. When
Jeremiah warned the king, the king and the people did not
listen, so they found themselves in trouble with God.

One is not set free to bring others into bondage. One is set
free to also enable them to set others free. Spiritual freedom is
the same way. To spiritually to be free through Christ one has
to be trained, and taught how to set people free through
witnessing and sharing the Gospel. One can be taught many
things, but one has to learn to walk first in that liberty that
Christ has given from a yoke of sin to be effect witness for
Christ. To not serve Christ will bring you back into captivity of
sin. Some believers begin to witness from the day they get
saved. They have such a dynamic testimony that people follow
them right into the church. Others are forced into hell, so to
speak, because their world around them rejects the testimony
of God and Christ. To deal with these people takes not only
faith, but trained in scriptural knowledge. The man possessed
by demons who was healed of demoniac possession was told
to go and tell his village. To be a witness there. The change
people see in you should be a testimony. If one goes back into
sin it hurts the testimony of God in your life. Yet if you are in
area that knew not your testimony or your rebellion this change
in your life should also be a testimony. Sin and rebellion
enslaves a person.

One has to wonder why God’s chosen people were rebellious
to the ways of God. It was because religious law had become
a task master with no meaning but to obey. Every generation
has to have leaders to keep freedom alive, to be able to set
captives of the law free from sin and rebellion. The religious
was never to be a task master but one obeyed for a purpose.
It should have life of its own. It should have meaning and
purpose in one’s life. To obey the law of liberty is to set people
free and not to enslave them. Israel had taken to obey the
gentile rules of slavery, because of this God would punish his
people for not obeying Him and freeing people.

To bring people into captive once freeing them makes your
word of no account. Our government for centuries lied to the
Indians and by lying it will take generations of time to undo the
harm of its lies. To understand freedom, to understand history,
to understand what shapes even our own nation failings
especially when it comes to bigotry and hate also means we
have to exam God’s way and what God originally said do and
what is happening in our nation. Go home and testify of the
great work God has done in your life. Set those at home free
first, and then go where ever else God needs you to go. They
might not believe you. God’s word is freedom since the
beginning of time to all people and to all nations to live in peace
and harmony.

Dear Heavenly Father help our nation as well as other nations
around the world to work toward freedom from sin through your
word. In Jesus precious name, Amen.
