The Prophecy Revealed In Matthew
|
Lesson Ten: by turtle
The other day a friend was telling me about a phone call they received. The breast cancer society called asking for money. Of course these groups need money and of course they have to solicit funds. However the beef my friend had was they had another type of cancer. They could not afford the medicine any better then the breast cancer society people. Now because it was a rare cancer the aid for the cancer was not available as with some groups. My friends grip was that they wanted money and truth the person had not a dollar to their name. The point is you can not give something you do not have. If you do it is a mistake.
Matthew 5:40-42 KJV (40) And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloke also. (41) And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain. (42) Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.
However the Bible says to give a man the cloak a man sues you for. Also to walk the extra mile with someone if they ask. Not to turn any one away. However is this taught in Old Testament.
Exodus 22:25-27 KJV (25) If thou lend money to any of my people that is poor by thee, thou shalt not be to him as an usurer, neither shalt thou lay upon him usury. (26) If thou at all take thy neighbour's raiment to pledge, thou shalt deliver it unto him by that the sun goeth down: (27) For that is his covering only, it is his raiment for his skin: wherein shall he sleep? and it shall come to pass, when he crieth unto me, that I will hear; for I am gracious.
Deuteronomy 24:10-13 KJV (10) When thou dost lend thy brother any thing, thou shalt not go into his house to fetch his pledge. (11) Thou shalt stand abroad, and the man to whom thou dost lend shall bring out the pledge abroad unto thee. (12) And if the man be poor, thou shalt not sleep with his pledge: (13) In any case thou shalt deliver him the pledge again when the sun goeth down, that he may sleep in his own raiment, and bless thee: and it shall be righteousness unto thee before the LORD thy God.
Poor man pledge was His cloak and if he was sued, his cloak was a pledge of payment. If one pledge he would. If someone pledge to give money to a church, to organization that is a promise they will do so. If you pledge to God or say you will you will do so. Your obligation is to God, not to man.
Now to go a mile was speaking of the dispatch of the king. One was to carry the post all the way to were it was to go. If your order was to take it one mile, and you were really needed for two miles you were to go two miles to get the job done. This really goes into last weeks lesson on obedience to those in authority over you. However there is a lot of truth here. If you work for someone go the extra mile, it often is rewarded, however some do over look the work. However our heavenly Father does not. He sees all we do and He will reward us accordingly.
Colossians 3:24-25 KJV (24) Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ. (25) But he that doeth wrong shall receive for the wrong which he hath done: and there is no respect of persons.
Who would ask if they could purchase something themselves? Only a poor man ask for things they have not and need. A man that can buy what he wants never ask for anything. I once made a bad statement that I never take anything I do not need. Well to take implies one steals, however what I really meant I never ask for something I do not need. Why because I know there others in need.
Deuteronomy 15:5-12 KJV (5) Only if thou carefully hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe to do all these commandments which I command thee this day. (6) For the LORD thy God blesseth thee, as he promised thee: and thou shalt lend unto many nations, but thou shalt not borrow; and thou shalt reign over many nations, but they shall not reign over thee. (7) If there be among you a poor man of one of thy brethren within any of thy gates in thy land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not harden thine heart, nor shut thine hand from thy poor brother: (8) But thou shalt open thine hand wide unto him, and shalt surely lend him sufficient for his need, in that which he wanteth. (9) Beware that there be not a thought in thy wicked heart, saying, The seventh year, the year of release, is at hand; and thine eye be evil against thy poor brother, and thou givest him nought; and he cry unto the LORD against thee, and it be sin unto thee. (10) Thou shalt surely give him, and thine heart shall not be grieved when thou givest unto him: because that for this thing the LORD thy God shall bless thee in all thy works, and in all that thou puttest thine hand unto. (11) For the poor shall never cease out of the land: therefore I command thee, saying, Thou shalt open thine hand wide unto thy brother, to thy poor, and to thy needy, in thy land. (12) And if thy brother, an Hebrew man, or an Hebrew woman, be sold unto thee, and serve thee six years; then in the seventh year thou shalt let him go free from thee.
One is not to enslave family more then seven years. Anyone that was Hebrew was consider family even if not close kin. However his debit was dropped after seven years. However family often holds debits over people head for years and years, especially wrongs.
Now Saul was king of Israel and David was considered at one point his enemy. He served the king faithfully, playing the harp and going into battle. However the king seen David as a threat. Yet when Saul chased him across the country trying to kill David, his enemy showed compassion. David cut the cloak of Saul in the cave showing he could of killed the king. With that it left peace between David and Saul. He defeated His enemy with compassion.
Matthew 5:43-47 KJV (43) Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. (44) But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; (45) That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust. (46) For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same? (47) And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so?
To love one enemy is not always easy. To not stomp a mud hole in someone though they hate you, is hard to grasp. It can only come from the love of God. God can prepare a table before thy enemies and you can sit and eat peacefully with someone. You can show more compassion and love for those that hate and persecute you because of mistake you made in the past. However it takes God grace to do it.
Psalms 23:5-6 KJV (5) Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. (6) Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.
Then Jesus goes on to say to be perfect. No one is perfect. No one is without fault so how can we be perfect like our heavenly Father. It is through loving others.
Matthew 5:48 KJV (48) Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.
Bless those who persecute you. Bless those who do you harm, despite the pain you feel. It is not easy. God love is perfect. To do as Christ taught is to do the same as the Father teaches by His Spirit in the Old Testament. That is point I am trying to make. God does not change the rules. Man changes the rules. One has to look at the history and context of passages and understand the meaning behind what Jesus was speaking as a Jew as well as living in Roman times. Our world we live in is often not as God fearing as we would like it to be, but that does not mean we do not show compassion and the love of Christ.
