The Prophecy Revealed In Matthew
|
Lesson Forty-eight: by turtle(Christina Farris)
This next chapter enters into the road to Jerusalem where Christ will eventually be crucified. Jesus was prophetic in his life to His disciples. Last week I skipped over one prophesy. Mainly because I wanted to bring other points about serving God. However today we are starting the road to Jerusalem where Christ would suffer. The next eight chapters will cover prophesy to the cross and the future.
Matthew 20:18-19 KJV (18) Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be betrayed unto the chief priests and unto the scribes, and they shall condemn him to death, (19) And shall deliver him to the Gentiles to mock, and to scourge, and to crucify him: and the third day he shall rise again.
Isaiah 53:3-10 KJV (3) He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. (4) Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. (5) But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. (6) All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. (7) He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth. (8) He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken. (9) And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth. (10) Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand.
The Messiah would be mocked, beaten and lead to the slaughter(his death on the cross). Yet Christ was willing to go freely because God chosen Him to be the sacrifice for the whole world, yet at the same time people by choice would demand his execution. it is hard to image one day having the crowd loving and then the crowd wanting him dead, but if one thinks about it people go through fads all the time with actors and actress, and political leaders. Some fall only to rise again and some never get up. However Christ physically was beaten. Hard to image in a country that uses words to crucify someone.
However as we travel down a road in Matthew 21 Christ gives instructions. to His disciples and even foretells them of what they will find when they get their. Is this Christ leading His disciples after three long years to a place of trust and obedience without question, I suspect so. Obedience to Christ after one is saved does not happen over night. Thomas would doubt, Peter asked questions, and many would wonder at the things Christ said. Yet Christ ability to direct and lead is fully seen by the devotion of His disciples. This still goes on today with those that follow Christ. In the beginning Christ taught the bases of following. He told the disciples he would make them fishers of men. Christ also taught obedience to even the point of going and doing whatever God said do. However would you follow Christ at the point of death? It is easy to follow Christ when He says to go get and go do, but would you be willing to die for God if He required it. However God requiring death is not by one’s own hand but the hand of the government and crowd. Christ taught submission through faith and sacrifice through legal system. Not suicide bombings. This week we seen on the news of more attacks were coming from Moslem world? Most of us wonder what it really means. However they have attacked our nation in two ways, suicide bombings like 911 and teaching our children and young adults. Yet they too say the same about us in regards of teaching about faith in God and taking over their country for liberty, which they feel is lawlessness compared to their country. However they understand not our liberty unless they lived here and some still do not grasp the idea of not being forced to believe. When someone forces one to think or believe a certain thing it is dangerous, yet at the same time no learning is just as evil it causes lawlessness. Within liberty there is education, freedom of religion, yet our nation is under one God. God taught choice but also submission to Him. Christ teaches choice and submission. Why should we submit to God one might ask. the blessing of God, For example we start Palm Sunday when Christ ask His Disciples to go get an ass and her colt. This is also prophesy from the Old Testament.
Matthew 21:1-7 KJV (1) And when they drew nigh unto Jerusalem, and were come to Bethphage, unto the mount of Olives, then sent Jesus two disciples, (2) Saying unto them, Go into the village over against you, and straightway ye shall find an ass tied, and a colt with her: loose them, and bring them unto me. (3) And if any man say ought unto you, ye shall say, The Lord hath need of them; and straightway he will send them. (4) All this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, (5) Tell ye the daughter of Sion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass. (6) And the disciples went, and did as Jesus commanded them, (7) And brought the ass, and the colt, and put on them their clothes, and they set him thereon.
Zechariah 9:9 KJV (9) Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.
The other Gospels though they record the ride into Jerusalem, Matthew is the only one to carry the prophecy state in Zachariah, because Matthew is written for the understanding of the Jews. This part of it being both a she ass and a colt is important to fulfilling the prophecy. This is the way Jews kings rode in their parades not meant for battle, for Christ then would of come in on a steed. He came into Jerusalem as a king of the Jews would. No doubt this would cause a stir. However something to note is Christ told the disciples to go and to find, and they did as Christ directed. They were subject to the king, yet His kingdom was not of politics but of faith. Meaning Christ kingdom was spiritual and not physical especially at the time of His death or in an earthly nature. Each person makes a choice whether to allow Christ the Word of God to rule in their hearts and minds. This is a kingdom of faith Christ was teaching His disciples about. This tradition is recorded in 2 Kings.
2 Kings 9:13 KJV (13) Then they hasted, and took every man his garment, and put it under him on the top of the stairs, and blew with trumpets, saying, Jehu is king.
Matthew 21:8-11 KJV (8) And a very great multitude spread their garments in the way; others cut down branches from the trees, and strawed them in the way. (9) And the multitudes that went before, and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna to the Son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest. (10) And when he was come into Jerusalem, all the city was moved, saying, Who is this? (11) And the multitude said, This is Jesus the prophet of Nazareth of Galilee.
People are determine make Christ king, but they had not realized it would not be a physical kingdom on earth in their day. God’s kingdom has always been spiritual, until Christ returns in the flesh. It is only fitting that after the march Christ then goes into the temple and cast out those selling inside it.
Matthew 21:12-14 KJV (12) And Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves, (13) And said unto them, It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves. (14) And the blind and the lame came to him in the temple; and he healed them.
Isaiah 56:7 KJV (7) Even them will I bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer: their burnt offerings and their sacrifices shall be accepted upon mine altar; for mine house shall be called an house of prayer for all people.
Christ house is a house of prayer, Christ is quoting from the Old Testament. Christ purged the temple twice. Once in early of his ministry and the second time was on Palm Sunday. Christ still purges His temple today. When you receive Christ you become the temple of the Holy Spirit. He comes and lives within your heart. He purges us to obedience.
1 Corinthians 3:16-17 KJV (16) Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? (17) If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.
When one chose to believe in Christ and surrender their heart to Him, He going to purge and clean that temple when we get it defiled. He does not want anything unclean in it. It like a woman when she gets a hold of mop and cleans the house from top to bottom.
Here we end today’s lesson with Priest and Scribes being upset because Jesus used the word of God against them.
Psalms 8:2 KJV (2) Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength because of thine enemies, that thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger.
Matthew 21:15-17 KJV (15) And when the chief priests and scribes saw the wonderful things that he did, and the children crying in the temple, and saying, Hosanna to the Son of David; they were sore displeased, (16) And said unto him, Hearest thou what these say? And Jesus saith unto them, Yea; have ye never read, Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings thou hast perfected praise? (17) And he left them, and went out of the city into Bethany; and he lodged there.
Allow God to spiritual clean your heart today with His Word through His Spirit. God’s word purges sin out of the heart and soul of man upon belief. With obedience to God’s word God heals.
