The Prophecy Revealed In Matthew
|
Lesson Thirteen: by turtle(cf)
God is to be honored in all we do, especially in how we pray. Jesus when asked how to pray gives a demonstration of how we should pray. However is what Jesus taught mentioned in the Old Testament. Well there not a specific direction on prayer in the Old Testament, there are however many prayers in the Old Testament or people praying. Psalms is both prayer and praises. However is Jesus out of order when He called God Father. He tells us to pray in this manner/likeness “Our Father which art in heaven”.
Matthew 6:9 KJV (9) After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
Before the flood men were sons of God. The word daughter of men imply they did not worship men.
Genesis 6:4 KJV (4) There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.
God declares to Pharaoh that Israel is His first born. Pharaoh’s worship another god called Ra. Meaning God saying these are my people let them go they are not yours.
Exodus 4:22 KJV (22) And thou shalt say unto Pharaoh, Thus saith the LORD, Israel is my son, even my firstborn:
However this proves that God see a group of people as his it does not prove that He is their Father or that title should be used. When did Israel declare God Father, or any other time for that matter.
Deuteronomy 32:6-10 KJV (6) Do ye thus requite the LORD, O foolish people and unwise? is not he thy father that hath bought thee? hath he not made thee, and established thee? (7) Remember the days of old, consider the years of many generations: ask thy father, and he will shew thee; thy elders, and they will tell thee. (8) When the most High divided to the nations their inheritance, when he separated the sons of Adam, he set the bounds of the people according to the number of the children of Israel. (9) For the LORD'S portion is his people; Jacob is the lot of his inheritance. (10) He found him in a desert land, and in the waste howling wilderness; he led him about, he instructed him, he kept him as the apple of his eye.
Who’s child are you? Are you God’s child or are you man’s child meaning your earthly father child. Do obey God over your father. To obey your earthly father is to obey God, but it is also better to obey God then your earthly father.
1 Chronicles 29:10 KJV (10) Wherefore David blessed the LORD before all the congregation: and David said, Blessed be thou, LORD God of Israel our father, for ever and ever.
Isaiah 63:16 KJV (16) Doubtless thou art our father, though Abraham be ignorant of us, and Israel acknowledge us not: thou, O LORD, art our father, our redeemer; thy name is from everlasting.
God is called Father in the Old Testament. Our Father in the presents of the congregation of Israel. We know God name is sacred. However how many times to we instead of hallowing it used it in vain. Some are more guilty then others. We get mad or get angry and words fly out without even thinking about it.
Exodus 20:7 KJV (7) Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
Lets continue to the next verse in Matthew on what Jesus taught us to pray. We are to pray “His kingdom come, His will be done on earth as it is in heaven”.. Now if we are to pray this what other scripture Old Testament declares it. First verse in Matthew.
Matthew 6:10 KJV (10) Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
2 Kings 19:19 KJV (19) Now therefore, O LORD our God, I beseech thee, save thou us out of his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that thou art the LORD God, even thou only.
Hezekiah prayed the verse above, however he was only requesting what God had already declare for His people.
Exodus 9:15-16 KJV (15) For now I will stretch out my hand, that I may smite thee and thy people with pestilence; and thou shalt be cut off from the earth. (16) And in very deed for this cause have I raised thee up, for to shew in thee my power; and that my name may be declared throughout all the earth.
Part is prayer is declaring what is rightfully declared by God for the people. Jesus prayed God’s kingdom come and His will would be done. It a declaration of honor God is plan to do anyway. It is a type of praise.
Praying for our needs is important as well. However did people pray for there needs in the Old Testament. Certainly they did. Isaac request God on his wife behalf on why she had no children. God promised him conception. A child was need for the family line to continue. However we are to pray for our daily needs.
Matthew 6:11 KJV (11) Give us this day our daily bread.
Exodus 16:11-12 KJV (11) And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, (12) I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel: speak unto them, saying, At even ye shall eat flesh, and in the morning ye shall be filled with bread; and ye shall know that I am the LORD your God.
I wonder how many missionary in the foreign and even home field that seen starving people have asked Lord send us manna from heaven. We have a responsibility to send manna, food to those around. It not just a civic duty or a humanitarian duty but a godly duty to share of our abundance with those less fortunate. However God provide for Israel in the wilderness without others help. We have a responsibility to love the way God love us. Part of sharing who God is, is providing for the hungry that know not to cry out to Him. Christ says not to worry about what we will eat or drink.
Luke 12:29-31 KJV (29) And seek not ye what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink, neither be ye of doubtful mind. (30) For all these things do the nations of the world seek after: and your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things. (31) But rather seek ye the kingdom of God; and all these things shall be added unto you. God knows are needs before we ask. Not to worry about those things. However God provision might be that nasty piece of liver, or yuky Brussels sprouts. Yet it is food. God provides our needs according to His will and purpose in our life.
Ruth 2:16-17 KJV (16) And let fall also some of the handfuls of purpose for her, and leave them, that she may glean them, and rebuke her not. (17) So she gleaned in the field until even, and beat out that she had gleaned: and it was about an ephah of barley.
When it comes to forgiveness one has to ask God for it. As well we should forgive because God loved us and sent His Son. Is what Jesus taught Old Testament as well.
Matthew 6:12-14 KJV (12) And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. (13) And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. (14) For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you:
Forgiveness to those who seek one’s life. David is example of showing mercy to the king in obedience to God.
1 Samuel 24:9-17 KJV (9) And David said to Saul, Wherefore hearest thou men's words, saying, Behold, David seeketh thy hurt? (10) Behold, this day thine eyes have seen how that the LORD had delivered thee to day into mine hand in the cave: and some bade me kill thee: but mine eye spared thee; and I said, I will not put forth mine hand against my lord; for he is the LORD'S anointed. (11) Moreover, my father, see, yea, see the skirt of thy robe in my hand: for in that I cut off the skirt of thy robe, and killed thee not, know thou and see that there is neither evil nor transgression in mine hand, and I have not sinned against thee; yet thou huntest my soul to take it. (12) The LORD judge between me and thee, and the LORD avenge me of thee: but mine hand shall not be upon thee. (13) As saith the proverb of the ancients, Wickedness proceedeth from the wicked: but mine hand shall not be upon thee. (14) After whom is the king of Israel come out? after whom dost thou pursue? after a dead dog, after a flea. (15) The LORD therefore be judge, and judge between me and thee, and see, and plead my cause, and deliver me out of thine hand. (16) And it came to pass, when David had made an end of speaking these words unto Saul, that Saul said, Is this thy voice, my son David? And Saul lifted up his voice, and wept. (17) And he said to David, Thou art more righteous than I: for thou hast rewarded me good, whereas I have rewarded thee evil.
David perhaps shows more mercy then many are willing to do. I think our example really is the death of Christ on the cross. Though Christ paid our price for sin it was God’s will, God still was willing to do it for us. In Old Testament people mocked God much like they do today. Best thing we can do is forgive those who mock us and cause us harm. It is hard task to do when pride is hurt. Yet God requires us to forgive. Let us be example of forgiveness.
Matthew 6:13 KJV (13) And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
God purpose is not to tempt us. God provide the tree in the garden of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. The purpose was a test of obedience. The tempter was a serpent. Man made their choice. Does God allow us to be tempted yes, but we should pray that God will direct our path and lead us not into temptation.
Proverbs 3:5-6 KJV (5) Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. (6) In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
Eve chose to disobey, She did not say God this serpent is saying this fruit okay can I have it. She said hmm it looks good and tried it. There was no repentance from Adam and Eve or the serpent. Neither did Cain repent. All took the punishment for there deed. However we have a choice seek forgiveness or be abandoned. It our choice. Consequence of our choice is heaven or hell.
Matthew 6:14-15 KJV (14) For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: (15) But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
Can you forgive others the same things you do yourself? However I learn over the years that it takes a willingness to forgive. A willingness to seek God to enable us to forgive at times. Some people are not as forgiving. When they are not then we have to ask, how can we expect God too.
Exodus 23:4-5 KJV (4) If thou meet thine enemy's ox or his ass going astray, thou shalt surely bring it back to him again. (5) If thou see the ass of him that hateth thee lying under his burden, and wouldest forbear to help him, thou shalt surely help with him.
Forgiveness comes with helping your enemy if they be in need or you help them in someway like a lost of animal. Though one like to take revenge God ask us to live in peace with our enemy. Battles and wars are when danger to life and limb. Many wars that seem unjust in the Bible on first look, can be seen as protection for life.
What Christ teaches is the same as Old Testament. However there is a time for war and time for peace.
Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 KJV (1) To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: (2) A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; (3) A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; (4) A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; (5) A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; (6) A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; (7) A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; (8) A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.
Choose this day to serve God, who will be a loving Father. Keeper of all who trust in Him.
