The Prophecy Revealed In Matthew
|
Lesson Sixty-Four: by turtle
Several things go through my mind as we continue the story of the cross today. With all the Bible evidence why do so many people still deny the truth of a risen Savior. Is it because they wish not to examine the truth of God’s Word? The ideal of forgiveness without a price to be paid impossible to fathom? Or the inability for one to grasp that God’s forgiveness for all despite our mistakes. Today has you look at scripture be reminded of the stripes our Savior bore for you, I and the rest of the world. One price to redeem us. One murderous act of crucifying one man who was the Son of God on the cross. Even our sin could not deter God from loving us. He loved us so much His Son rose again the third day and was not held by the tomb in which He laid. Let us begin again in Matthew and examine what Jesus went through on the cross, what about Old Testament what proof is there that these things would happen to Jesus.
Matthew 27:26-31 KJV (26) Then released he Barabbas unto them: and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified. (27) Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the common hall, and gathered unto him the whole band of soldiers. (28) And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe. (29) And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews! (30) And they spit upon him, and took the reed, and smote him on the head. (31) And after that they had mocked him, they took the robe off from him, and put his own raiment on him, and led him away to crucify him.
What is scourging? One might ask it was a punishment in Jewish law for the crime of fornication, adultery, rape and other crimes. In the spiritual sense Christ was whipped for our spiritual adultery and fornication. This is not sex act this is for idolatry. However the verse below apply to physical immorality. It is example of what is to come spiritually in the lives of sinners, but also for the punish Christ would bear spiritually for our sins against God.
Leviticus 19:20 KJV (20) And whosoever lieth carnally with a woman, that is a bondmaid, betrothed to an husband, and not at all redeemed, nor freedom given her; she shall be scourged; they shall not be put to death, because she was not free.
Deuteronomy 22:16-18 KJV (16) And the damsel's father shall say unto the elders, I gave my daughter unto this man to wife, and he hateth her; (17) And, lo, he hath given occasions of speech against her, saying, I found not thy daughter a maid; and yet these are the tokens of my daughter's virginity. And they shall spread the cloth before the elders of the city. (18) And the elders of that city shall take that man and chastise him;
Deuteronomy 25:1-3 KJV (1) If there be a controversy between men, and they come unto judgment, that the judges may judge them; then they shall justify the righteous, and condemn the wicked. (2) And it shall be, if the wicked man be worthy to be beaten, that the judge shall cause him to lie down, and to be beaten before his face, according to his fault, by a certain number. (3) Forty stripes he may give him, and not exceed: lest, if he should exceed, and beat him above these with many stripes, then thy brother should seem vile unto thee.
Matthew 10:16-17 KJV (16) Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves. (17) But beware of men: for they will deliver you up to the councils, and they will scourge you in their synagogues;
This whip that was used had more then one strap attached to the handle of the whip. At the end of each whip had bone or mental fragments in it. The whip would hit not only the back, but groin and face area causing great pain. As far as prophecy concerning the event foretold happening to Jesus it occurs in several spots.
Isaiah 53:5-6 KJV (5) But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. (6) All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.
Isaiah 53:10 KJV (10) Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand.
Isaiah 28:13-16 KJV (13) But the word of the LORD was unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little; that they might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken. (14) Wherefore hear the word of the LORD, ye scornful men, that rule this people which is in Jerusalem. (15) Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves: (16) Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.
The cornerstone is Jesus. Jesus being the Word of God, being the foundation of faith. When we believe in Jesus the Word of God, the Spirit of Prophesy, the man on the cross who died for you and me, we are no longer lost to God but saved through faith.
Let us continue. Christ did not deserve to die this is true, but this selfless act of going to the cross was done without fighting back. He went willingly. He did it for us.
Isaiah 53:7-8 KJV (7) He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth. (8) He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken.
Christ going before the soldiers as well as the government
Matthew 27:27-31 KJV (27) Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the common hall, and gathered unto him the whole band of soldiers.
Isaiah 50:6 KJV (6) I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: I hid not my face from shame and spitting.
Lamentations 3:30 KJV (30) He giveth his cheek to him that smiteth him: he is filled full with reproach.
Micah 5:1 KJV (1) Now gather thyself in troops, O daughter of troops: he hath laid siege against us: they shall smite the judge of Israel with a rod upon the cheek.
Isaiah 22:21 KJV (21) And I will clothe him with thy robe, and strengthen him with thy girdle, and I will commit thy government into his hand: and he shall be a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to the house of Judah.
The briars or the crown of thorns a symbol of what was taking place in Israel, Those things that needed to be cut away was fixing to be cut away. The briars cover Christ face, but the word would remain when those briars were removed. The briars a symbol of the worldly ways.
Proverbs 24:30-31 KJV (30) I went by the field of the slothful, and by the vineyard of the man void of understanding; (31) And, lo, it was all grown over with thorns, and nettles had covered the face thereof, and the stone wall thereof was broken down.
Christ own words in Luke.
Luke 18:31-33 KJV (31) Then he took unto him the twelve, and said unto them, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem, and all things that are written by the prophets concerning the Son of man shall be accomplished. (32) For he shall be delivered unto the Gentiles, and shall be mocked, and spitefully entreated, and spitted on: (33) And they shall scourge him, and put him to death: and the third day he shall rise again.
Prior to the event of His crucifixion on the cross. The road to the cross was tough, not easy road after being beaten, mocked, scourged, He would of physically been drained, especially for the loss of blood. Yet Jesus did this all willingly. On the road to Golgotha a man name Simon of Cyrene would help him carry the cross, He would witness Jesus crucifixion and would be so moved that He would spread the gospel to the Greeks upon His own salvation.
Matthew 27:32-33 KJV (32) And as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name: him they compelled to bear his cross. (33) And when they were come unto a place called Golgotha, that is to say, a place of a skull,
Part of taking up our cross and following Jesus is being willing to forgive and to love as Christ did on earth. Willing to live a sacrificial life. However in today’s society you can expect rulers to be followed by believers and non believers as we live side by side until Christ return. However to lay one life down is to say I surrender all to Jesus and I will allow Him to use me in anyway He needs me to serve even if it is through persecution of believers. I will stand my ground for Him. I will tell the story even unto my own demise. There been many saints that have told the story of Christ even when it was almost impossible even in peaceful times. Let us hold others to the law of the land, but at the same time be willing to live for Jesus abiding by the rules of the land. The disciples laid there life down by disobeying the rulers in the spreading of the Gospel. That is one law that God ordains that man as tried to prevent. We are to go despite persecution as God directs us. A good example is Paul before the centurion.
Acts 22:24-25 KJV (24) The chief captain commanded him to be brought into the castle, and bade that he should be examined by scourging; that he might know wherefore they cried so against him. (25) And as they bound him with thongs, Paul said unto the centurion that stood by, Is it lawful for you to scourge a man that is a Roman, and uncondemned?
